Bad idea #79

I have the technological prowess of a chinchilla.
So naturally I thought it was a good idea to try to design my own website. I’ve barely even started down the path, but it’s been an eye-opening experience so far.
Lesson 1: Did you know that if you buy a domain from one company (let’s call them Go Daddy) and decide to go with another company for web hosting (like, say, Bluehost), a very mean regulator named ICANN sticks you in the penalty box and basically holds your website hostage for 60 days? Yeah, me either. Or maybe you did know that, in which case, any more tips for me before I accidentally stumble into a very hard-learned Lesson 2? I’d like to get this thing up and running before 2014.
Anyhow, today is Day 61, my friends, and now that I’m no longer trapped in the iron grasp of ICANN’s clutch, I’m off to do some website designin’. Wish me luck!

I did not know this. Very interesting.

  3. Susan says:

Wait…HUH? I have separate host from GoDaddy (who I also bought my domain name from). This did NOT happen to me… Like, nothing happened at all.

WTF, Meredith?? What did you DO? J/K. 😉

    Seriously, though, I'm sorry!!!!

  4. Meredith says:

Susan, I think (based on my reading of ICANN's FAQs) that the waiting period thing only applies if you try to transfer registrars within 60 days of your initial registration. So I think you'd be ok if you bought your domain, sat on it for a while and then switched.

But I really have no idea what I'm talking about. Like I said: chinchilla.

Me and Pam gave you a shout out on the blog today! http://tinyurl.com/4w5jf85

  6. Susan says:

Hmmm…I signed up for a separate hosting the same day I bought my domain. I really have NO idea what happened to you. Maybe it's tied to the hosting service you signed up with…? Either way, good luck and email me if you have questions!

  7. Karen Strong says:

Oh, that's not cool! Glad that the waiting period is over!

As a professional software geek, let me know if you need any help. :)

  8. Meredith says:

Thanks for the offers of help, Susan and Karen! I'm sure I'll have tons of them. :)

  9. Pam Harris says:

Good luck! and thanks for the words of advice, as I'm considering getting my own domain name. :)

  10. Heather Hellmann says:

I had no idea there were rules like that. Then again, I know diddly-squat about creating a web page.

  11. Elizabeth Mueller says:

NO KIDDING! That's just weird. Talk about monopoly, sheesh. I'm so glad you're out of the woods. How did you survive? :(

Wow, that sucks…. Hope you're having fun web designing now!

I'm a fellow crusader stopping by to say hey and to follow you :-)

    xx Rachel

  13. Michael Offutt says:

Dang…that's a chinchilla? How do they make an entire coat out of those things?

  14. Carol Riggs says:

Hiya, buddy crusader! I'm making the rounds today and checking out your blog. Yeah, weird about the hostage situation. Hope you're doing well with the designing now. I've designed ones from Blogger (stripping out the Blog post elements) and it's really easy–and FREE. My carolriggs.com website isn't a blogger one, however. I've just made some for others.

Nice to meet you, and Happy Friday! :)

Enjoy designing your site today! ☺
Aw, chinchillas are so cute! I just want to squeeze them! But I probably shouldn't, huh? 😉
I'm a fellow Crusader, fyi. Nice to meet you.

  17. raisingmarshmallows says:

Good to know fellow crusader! Good luck with the web design, it took me 6 hours just to figure out how to make a "grab button." Now following.

  18. Danette says:

Good luck with your website designing! I dropped by from Rachael's crusade list to say hello! Looks to be a lot of fun already! Cheers!

  20. Lola Sharp says:

    Hello fellow crusader! *waves*

Um, not only did I not know that…but I'm such a tech-dolt that I'm not sure I even understand what you're talking about. *blushes*

Good luck! :) Ad when you figure it all out, can you explain it all to me? Ya know, like blog domain for dummies? I use blogspot, no one else can use my blog title name an they? (at least on blogger, right?) (is the worry that someone else'll use it on say, wordpress, or something?)

    Have a delightful weekend,
    Lola

  21. Theresa Milstein says:

    That's terrible. Good luck.

I'm a fellow crusader. We're in the same YA fantasy group. Nice to meet you.

Good luck with getting your website up and running Meredith. Hopefully you won't have any more setbacks now. The chinchilla is super cute :)

  23. Catherine Ensley says:

Hi fellow crusader and writer of YA. Sorry to hear this. Glad you alerted the rest of us, so it doesn't happen to us. Thanks! I'm your newest follower.

  24. Raquel Byrnes says:

OMGosh I didn't know that would happen! Sorry you had to deal with that. Anyway, just dropping by to introduce myself as a fellow crusader and new follower. I'm off to tackle challenge #1 now. =)

  25. Trisha says:

I didn't know that – sucks it happened to you!! Glad to hear you can get going on the site now though :)

  26. Regina says:

That really stinks. I don't have any words of wisdom for you since I have never done this before either. I hope that there are some knowledgeable people out there that can help you. Hope to see it up and running too. Fellow crusader who is now following! :)

  27. Jordan McCollum says:

Ohhh, I think I know what happened. You didn't have to transfer your domain to Bluehost to set up hosting there. You just had to edit your nameservers for the domain inside GoDaddy to point back to BlueHost.

Well, glad you've got it all worked out. I've really liked Bluehost for my site; hope you do too! (I use WordPress for my Bluehost site; I love it.)

  28. Meredith says:

Jordan, that's exactly what I did! Today has been a very eye-opening day in terms of discovering all the mistakes I made along the way. :)
