When new ideas attack!

Hi friends! I’ve been out of town (lest you were wondering where I’d scampered off to). I was up in Pennsylvania visiting family. While we were there, we went the Carnegie Museum of Natural History to show my daughter the dinosaurs. (Verdict? She kind of just wanted to touch the walls.) I wandered into the Hall of Architecture, and there in the corner, hidden amidst looming church doors and arches, was this.

It’s a cast of the zodiac column from Sts. Pierre et Paul Church, built in 12th Century France. And my brain took note. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about this damned thing since Friday. Who made it? Why? What are the signs of the the zodiac doing in a medieval church? I had a freaking dream about it two nights ago. This column will not leave me alone, you guys. I have new characters, I have a new plot, I have an entire new book swimming around in my head.

Except—STOP IT! I still have half of my WIP to finish, not to mention several rounds of edits, and possibly something else that will need attention. I sat down on Sunday night and tried to write, and all my brain cared about was a possible opening for the zodiac column book. It’s going to take some serious mental discipline to get myself back on track here, but it must be done. The zodiac has to wait.

What about you guys? Ever had SNIs grab you by the helm and run amok? Did you wind up writing those?
