Friday Faves: December 9

Sorry for the radio silence this week. I’ve been making a real push to get all of my revisions finished up ASAP, and, well, it’s taken every spare bit of free time I’ve had. I know, excuses, excuses. Onward with the Faves!

Favorite blog post I read this week: This amazingly detailed post from Adventures in YA and Children’s Publishing on adding backstory to your novels. Read and learn, amigos. Read and learn.

Favorite blog series I read this week: This post and this post from author Natalie Whipple on how to write beginnings and introduce characters, with a list of tips on how to do it right and and pitfalls to avoid.

Favorite picture of the week (AKA Project 365 entry): Turns out I’m allergic to Christmas. Or Christmas trees, at least. But still, they’re pretty to look at.

Favorite read of the week: Okay, technically I still have like 50 pages to go, but I’m going to go ahead and give this week’s favorite read title to DESTINED by Jessie Harrell. It’s a retelling of the Cupid/Psyche myth that is SO MUCH FUN. Check it out!

Favorite moment of the week: You know that feeling you get when you’ve been slaving away at revisions and you finally get to the point where you’re ready to send your WIP off to betas? Yeah. That.

Least favorite moment of the week: You know that feeling you get when you’re so sick with food poisoning that you’re lying on the bathroom floor hoping praying wishing for death? Yeah. That.

Second favorite moment of the week: You know that feeling you get when you try on a pair of jeans that haven’t fit you in a while and they not only zip up but actually fit? Yeah. That.

Second least favorite moment of the week: You know that feeling you get when you realize that said jeans are only zipping up because it’s the day after you had food poisoning and there’s no way this is permanent and—I’m sorry, is this getting old?

Favorite video of the week: So I’m not actually going to post a video this week but rather link to it because it’s … um … moderately inappropriate? But if you’re so inclined, go here and look at this pole dance. No worries, it’s not Vegas-style pole dancing, it’s amazing-feats-of-artistry-and-strength-a-la-Cirque-du-Soleil pole dancing. (The video really starts around 1:18). And if you do watch it, let me know what you think!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

  1. So sorry you had food poisoning! That’s the worst, and I totally agree — all you want to do is die. What’s with that?
But I do thank you for the DESTINED shout out! So glad you’re enjoying it and I can’t wait to hear what you think when you get to the end.

Yes, awful. Fortunately I haven’t been that sick in years. Hopefully I won’t repeat it any time soon!

ANd I’ll be sure to let you know. I’m sure the ending will be just as great. :)

  2. Holly says:

Ooh these are some great links, Meredith! Thanks. :) And glad you’re feeling better after the food poisoning — that really is the worst feeling ever.

  3. Love all of them. Except the food poisoning related ones. :( I’m sorry! But on the plus side? Your jeans zipped!

  4. Aww, so sorry you’ve been sick! No fun, but yay for the jeans fitting! There’s always a silver lining. :)

Thanks for the links to Natalie Whipple’s posts. I somehow missed those, and that’s just what I’m currently struggling with. Off to read them now!

  5. Yay for sending out your WIP! Boo to food poisoning…

And oh my gosh, that video! I was like ‘okay, yeah, I’m impressed’, and definitely agreeing with you on the chinese circus-esque gymnastics, but when she started walking in the air I was back to being in the audience and mentalling ooohing. I saw Gala Darling link to a pole-dance on Twitter, you didn’t find the video through her did you?

    • Meredith says:

Right? AMAZING. That girl’s body is so, so strong. This video has been making the rounds this week, so I’m sure it was all over Twitter, but I actually found it when a friend forwarded me the link.

  6. Ugh. Food poisoning. Hope you’re feeling better! And what an excellent compilation!

  7. Well, you managed to make food poisoning funny and entertaining! That’s a feat! Hope you’re feeling better and can wear the jeans at least twice before they don’t fit again. :0)
