So…yeah. I have a confession to make. Up until yesterday, I’d never read Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. But then I found myself holed up on the couch all afternoon with food poisoning following a truly epic birthday dinner for my husband the night before, so I picked the book up. And do I feel foolish for never having read it before. I know most of you who might happen to be reading this now have in fact read Speak, so I won’t say much else other than: This book changed my life. I can’t get it out of my head.
While I’m on a roll, I’ll go ahead and make another confession. I’ve never read To Kill a Mockingbird. There were two teachers at my high school who split the honors American Lit classes. One teacher taught To Kill a Mockingbird. I didn’t have her. I had the one who taught Of Mice and Men (this, in addition to The Grapes of Wrath). I’d already read about George and Lennie and the petting of rabbits (that sounds dirty) in the 7th grade, so I just took a break during those few weeks. Looking back now, I should have taken the initiative and just read To Kill a Mockingbird on my own, but you try convincing my 15-year-old self to do anything requiring a modicum of additional effort. Good luck with that. But I think I’ll head out to the library today and pick it up.
What about you? Any classic books (new or old) you’ve never read?
