Today the lovelies at YA Highway are asking:
What was the best book you read in September?
Which, turns out, is a hard question to answer because I read a lot of books in September, and I enjoyed quite a few of them. I read THE PENDERWICKS on the advice of a friend and just fell in love with it. It was charming and delightful and totally the type of story that I would have devoured as a ten-year-old. I can’t wait to introduce my daughter to the series when she’s, you know, old enough to read and stuff.
But if I had to pick only ONE book, I think I’m going to give it to FUN HOME: A FAMILY TRAGICOMIC by Alison Bechdel. This graphic novel details the complicated relationship between Bechdel and her father, a harsh, distant, closeted homosexual who takes his own life when Bechdel is in college.
FUN HOME is unflinching yet gorgeous. Heartbreaking yet laugh-out-loud funny. Bechdel’s way with language sucks you in, and her drawings take hold of you, haunt you to the core and refuse to let go. I devoured this book in a day. My only wish is that I’d discovered it sooner.
What about you? Ever read FUN HOME? What was the best book you read this month?
